Winners and Wienies

A veteran editor once chastised me for using the word "guts" in my copy. He explained how instead "intestinal fortitude" would "more eloquently convey a word picture of moral or physical courage." Whatever. To his comment I replied, "risk-takers, leaders and winners have guts. Pencil-pushing yes-men, old editors who never go out into the field and wienies have intestinal fortitude." It's your guess into which category he fell. And yes, I re-edited my copy at bluelines back to "guts."
