The computer age was supposed to result in less paper and easier, more direct access to information. The actual result has been along the lines of more paper and less accessible information. Add in the ever-increasing cost of storage for paper documents and a stagnant economy, even the most confirmed Luddite would have to conclude that, while it is not yet possible to eliminate paper, paper alone as an archiving choice has got to go. The issue is not whether a company's archive should be digital, but how the archive will be created and used. The application of the latest advances in indexing and retrieval technology to a company's electronic archive, whether in development or already in place, will result in an archive that meets corporate needs for cost savings and productivity, satisfies end-users' requirements for efficient document retrieval, and fully conforms to legal requirements for document retention and production.
