Sixty participants from institutions or businesses in the Mediterranean olive oil sector came together at the end of last year for an international course on the organoleptic assessment of virgin olive oil organised by the International Olive Councilin collaboration with the Hellenic Ministry of Rural Development and Food and the Institute of Olive Tree and Subtropical Plants (NAGREF). Greek trainees accounted for a particularly large share of the turnout at the course, which was held in Chania on the island of Crete. Though unable to attend the official opening, the Secretary-General of the Hellenic Ministry of Rural Development and Food, Costas Skiadas, forwarded a speech which was read out. Beginning with a welcome to participants and lecturerson behalf of the Minister and words of thanks for the organising institutions, he went on to underline the important role the International Olive Council played in the world olive products sector and to highlight the Greek Government's support of the correct application of the organoleptic assessment method as a factor in the quality evaluation of virgin olive oils.
