Interference with RIA Theophylline Assay in a Patient Receiving Dimenhydrinate

Summary:A significant cross reactivity of the antibody utilized in the Clinical Assays RIA Theophylline Assay was observed in a patient sample. Dimenhydrinate (Dramaminereg;) is the 8-chlorotheophylline salt of diphenhydramine. The 8-chlorotheophylline cross reacted at 88 to 400 percent depending on the assay conditions.
