The MV Kwangsi, powered by a Taikoo-Doxford 67LBD4 engine, had arrived in Singapore and a routine crankcase inspection revealed flakes of white metal in the crankpit of Nol cylinder. A strip-down showed that No 1 centre top end bearings had run, and the pins were fairly badly scored. The crosshead was sent ashore for the pins to be ground 0.030in undersize and the bearings remetalled and machined to the same undersize. Two sets of tethered engine trials both resulted in overheating of the new bearings; on each occasion they were scraped, the oilways cleared, and finally with the clearance increased from 0.006 to 0.008in a satisfactory engine trial was achieved.
