As technical innovations go, the new Sandwich Plate System (SPS) from Intelligent Engineering and BASF subsidiary Elastogran has created quite a stir amongst members of the maritime community. As exclusively revealed in MER (Dec 2000/Jan 2001, page 49), this unique technology is viewed by many as the future replacement of conventional stiffened steel plates. A steel sandwich with an elastomer filling, it is said to offer several advantages such as ease of installation due to a reduction in complexity, lower weight, and fewer maintenance requirements, leading to an increased service life. Applicable to all areas usually reserved for the use of stiffened steel plate, Intelligent Engineering has long been promoting its superior resistance to impact, increased vibration damping, and advanced thermal and acoustic insulation.
