The near-surface currents and hydrology of the northern Namibian shelf, between 19 degreesS and 21 degreesS, were studied on board FRS Africana in July 1999. In addition to recording currents, temperature, salinity and dissolved oxygen directly, sea-surface temperatures were studied from infrared satellite images. There was consistent northward current flow on the inner shelf and a more southward-orientated flow on the outer shelf. The survey confirmed the presence of coastal upwelling in the study area, but with regions of off shore and onshore flow on the outer shelf. Meso-scale hydrological and circulation features are discussed in the light of previous studies.
