As The Engineer went to press, just hours before the polls opened on Thursday, all the signs pointed to another big Labour win. Of course, as many of the candidates repeatedly said throughout the election campaign, often in the face of adverse opinion poll ratings: 'The only poll that matters is the one on 7 June'. At risk, then, of making ourselves a hostage to fortune, what follows is a 'morning after' look at just what a future Labour government — if indeed it is Labour that wins — has in store for UK industry. We focus on four fronts, all of which impinge on the well-being of industrial companies: the economy, the workplace and employment laws, education and training, and finally, the environment.
