Calcium gluconate gel by inunction has been used by ICI Mond Division since June 1971 as the first treatment of hydrofluoric acid skin burns.Experience in 43 liquid splashes and 10 vapour burns proves that this treatment is at least as effective as that by calcium gluconate injection. It has several advantages over the injection treatment.First aid and medical replacement of serum electrolytes in burns involving skin areas greater than 25 sq in (160 sq cm) is recommended.Human and animal experience indicate that benzalkonium chloride at either 0.03 per cent or 1 in 30 000 dilution are severe eye irritants and that this chemical should not be used to irrigate eyes. It is recommended that only water or isotonic saline should be used followed by the instillation of a few drops of sterile calcium gluconate (10 per cent) solution.
