Toxicity of contrast media used in urologic imaging

The contrast agents used in urologic imaging have different effects on different organ systems, including variable toxicity. The newer non-ionic agents have fewer anaphylactoid and nephrotoxic effects, mostly by virtue of their low osmolality. However, the rarity of serious reactions and the high cost of the new agents call for their judicious use in selected high-risk patients only.
