Inspections in Ireland are carried out daily across the whole food supply chain, and Martin says the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine (DAFM) checks are thorough processes, with each staff member assigned a specific responsibility. "Background checks can range from a full-time presence by DAFM staff -veterinarians and technical staff - at all slaughter plants, to risk-based and random checks at various outlets. These include farms; feed-production premises; food-processing and storage facilities; ancillary services, such as veterinary practices, medicines wholesalers and retailers; markets; and animal-breeding centres. They also extend to the food retail facilities through our colleagues in the health services," he said.
