The activity of designing begins with contexualised problems. These are usually heuristic concepts that enable the designer to proceed to a solution. He must understand the complex cultural categories that lie beneath the surface. Certain environmental configurations conflict with user capacities; research can establish boundaries between them. Theories of structure examine phenomena at the systems level, but do not preclude understanding of the unique elements in a situation.
