The liquid phase oxidation of 1.2.4-trimethylbenzene with air and mixtures of air and oxygen in the presence of cobaltous picolinate was examined. Is was found, that this cytalyst turns the oxidation to 3.4-dimethyl benzoic, 2.4-dimethyl benzoic, 2-methyl terephthalic and trimellitic acids; 3.4-dimethylbenzyl alcohol and 3.4-dimethylbenzaldehyde were found as intermediate products in the neutral components. Analytical and preparative thin layer chromatography, gas chromatography, infrared spectrometry and nuclear magnetic resonance are used for qualitative and quantitative analysis of the components, contained in the oxidate.
