Anyone who has ever been the victim of shoddy workmanship from a builder or a plumber - and that at one stage or another covers most people who have lived in or owned a home - will recognise the essential truth that professionalism and high standards are worth paying for. In egalitarian times, we might be tempted on occasion to wonder exactly how relevant professional bodies and the qualifications that they supervise and maintain are. But then we remember how that bit of dubious pipework or the poorly-laid pathway ended up by costing far more to be put right than it would have done if we'd gone to the professionals the first time. What applies to our home lives applies even more so to areas where safety and quality are involved. So the article on page 21 of this issue of Environmental Engineering is highly relevant to readers of this publication and to members of the Society of Environmental Engineers.
