A method is presented that predicts the fatigue life of a large diameter wire rope, from test data for small diameter rope. Dimensional analysis and the technique of interpolation and extrapolation are employed. The method is applied first to study size effects on the breaking strength of wire ropes and then to predict fatigue strength. Results are compared with experimental data in both cases.
