An approach for developing selfconfident, professionally assertive baccalaureate nursing graduates is described. The framework underlying a senior course is based on components of the women's movement in the United Statescolon; consciousness- raising, action, and reflection. The major educational tool, the Action Project, allows the students to apply their skills, knowledge, and raised consciousness in various contexts to useful ends. Educators and nurses in service agencies can adapt this framework to their own situations for leadership development and professional role socialization.
