Italy is an important country for ground calcium carbonate (GCC) based on its diverse range of calcium carbonate resources, the most famous being Carrara from where Michelangelo's marble for his sculptures was obtained. Limestone occurs in most parts of Italy and is generally softish in nature with the exception of the Sacile area where it is harder (marmorino). There arc two areas of chalk in Italy and these arc both in the Umbria area.
