The last time IM wrote about a Mr Bush entering the White House was in December 1988. At that time, we reported that "With undisguised relief, the USA has just pulled itself out of an incredible presidential election campaign". Clearly no-one could have foreseen that 12 years on, the manner of George Bush junior's attempt on the White House would easily eclipse his father's victory in terms of drama, and that same quote could have been applied equally well now as then.George W. Bush was inaugurated on 20 January 2001, and owing to the protracted nature of his eventual win over vice president Al Gore, his new team has had less time to prepare to lead the USA into the next millennium. As we all know, the election became one that was literally too close to call -even when the votes were counted, it seemed. Since it went down to the wire, Bush now inherits a divided nation, and he must take this into account when going forward with his policies.
