Elementis profits fall

Chromium chemical and pigments producer Elementis PLC has suffered a sharp fall in operating profit over the past six months because of tough economic conditions in the USA, and the wounding effects of increase energy costs.Operating profit for the six months ending 30 June 2001 was pound 17.5m., just 54 percent of what the group made in the first half of 2000. Higher energy costs were responsible for pound 7.3m. of the slump in profit, and the impact of the sales decline in North America was approximately pound 5m.
