Recent volcanic events in Iceland have acted as a salutary reminder of natures unremitting power over our modern and increasingly sophisticated world. The huge eruption of the Eyjafjallajokull volcano in Iceland during April caused a spreading ash plume which paralysed the flight network of northern Europe for several days. The volcanic eruption is also an educational, if dramatic, example of one of Earth's primary mineral and rock forming processes.
