ONE OF THE largest manufacturers of silicon carbide in the world, Washington Mills Electro Minerals Corp. (WMC) has around 60,000 tpa of crude SiC capacity between its plants in Orkanger, Norway and Niagara falls, USA. It is the only silicon carbide (alpha-SiC) manufacturer in the USA and the only environmentally friendly and EPA approved plant. WMC claims its patented "big furnace" technology is the best SiC technology available environmentally, because it is not only more energy efficient, it also collects and cleans the gases that would otherwise be released into the atmosphere. The gases generated through the furnace process move through a unique cleaning process that results in a sulphur cake by-product that that can be sold and used in agricultural applications.
