Activity in most sectors of the freight market has been rather subdued over the last couple of weeks and as a consequence freight levels, particularly in the Capesize and Panamax trades, have weakened. It remains to be seen if the decline is the beginning of a prolonged summer lull or just a short term set back. Coal and ore chartering in the Capesize trades in both the Atlantic and Pacific sectors, has been very quiet and rate levels, on the relatively few fixtures recorded, have been, marked down. The '"Amber" was fixed for 150,000 tons iron ore, Saldanha Bay/Taranto, 18/25 June, at 8.00 mt dollars basis 3 days shine both ends and the "Long Challenger" was reported fixed for 150,000 tons iron ore Tubarao/ Labuan, June, at 11.00 mt dollars basis 45,000 shinc/18,000 shine. Fixtures on a time charter basis included the 1973 built 129,000 tdw "Alina" delivery Hong Kong, 10/20 June, for a trip via Dampier, redelivery China at 14,000 dollars daily, and the 1994 built 163,000 tdw "Erradale" delivery Japan, end May, for a trip via Australia, redelivery UK 19,500 dollars daily.
