Charles Ansell, popularly known as 'Silent Charlie', joined the factory of Tukvar Company Limited, Darjeeling on January, 1872. But his attachment with that enterprise did not last long. He resignerd in 1875 and moved over to Brougham's Tea Estate asengineering assistant, where he had to spend a big part of his time just supervising the plucking operation. This nature of responsibility could hardly satisfy Ansell whose original intention was something more interesting, however — designing and building his own model of tea industry. Eventually, after serving a few months, he had left this firm also to accept a new assignment at the 'Woodside Iron Works' at Tung where he continued to serve for three years, and ultimately in 1879 took over the proprietorship from the erstwhile owner. And thus, Col. Hannangan writes, Ansell & Sons, Darjeeling Engineering Works, came into being, renaming the old one.
