Integrated aquaculture in sub-Sahran Africa

An incremental, farmer participatory approach to the developmentof sustainable aquaculture in integrated farming systems has beentested in Malawi. Average fish production rose from 900 toapproximately 1500 kg ha~-1 as farms achieved increasing level ofintegration. integrated farms produced almost six times the cashgenerated by the typical Malawian smallholder. The integratedpond-vegetable garden generates almost three times the annual netincome from the staple maize crop and the homestead combined.
