Say you re gathering information for your tax return, when someone points out that everyone cheats on those forms—why don't you? Then, you receive an invoice from a supplier with an error in your favor; someone suggests that the company probably cheated you at some time in the past, so why not keep quiet about the mistake? These are two common examples from the moral minefield we walk through every day. It isn't easy to do the right thing—not when someone seductively suggests you may be a sucker if you do. Even if you go by the rules, your pleasure in doing the right thing is somewhat spoiled by the suspicion that maybe you are a sucker.
