Metal Disc Delay Dielectrics

By using transmission line analogy, a theory for the phase change on transmission of microwaves through an artificial dielectric composed of a three-dimensional array of metal discs has been developed. The phase change is a function of the radius of the discs, the distance between the centre to centre of any two adjacent discs and the path length t traversed by the wave inside the dielectric. The phase change is an oscillatory function of t. Experimental values of the phase change as a function of t obtained by using a microwave interferometer have been compared with the theoretical values.
