Alcohol misuse is gradually moving up the political agenda. There is no shortage of evidence showing the damage it causes, physiologically, psychologically and socially. Yet the problem appears to be getting worse, as figures published by the NHS last week confirmed. The NHS has every reason to be concerned since it is recognised that alcohol-related behaviours and diseases are costing the health service dear. Statistics reveal a doubling of adult hospital admissions due to alcohol over the ten years between 1995/96 and 2005/06. But perhaps more worrying is that admissions for children under 16 were up by a third.
