Speakers at a recent discussion in the city stressed the need to devise immediately a "road map" to ensure the survival and growth of the country 's textile and garment sectors beyond 2005, when all protection would cease with the total phase-out of the MFA. The rescue plan will have to be formulated, they said, with joint participation of the government, entrepreneurs and related experts. The speakers, including business leaders, textile engineers and policy planners, observed that although both these economically important sectors are likely to suffer a shock in the post-MFA era, a major debacle is unlikely. The Institution of Bangladesh Textile Engineers Technologists organised the discussion on capacity building to survive the shock of globalisation.
