PORSCHE CLAIMS THAT the new Cayenne - now available in five distinctly different guises (a base V6 turbodiesel, abase turbo petrol V6, a twin-turbo V8 diesel, a twin-turbo petrol V8 and, in a month or so, a V6 petrol hybrid) - is more powerful, faster and yet more economical than at any time in its 12-year history. And to be perfectly honest, having spent some time driving the phenomenal new S Diesel variant, I don't doubt Porsche's claims for a single second. With a stonking new twin-turbo 4.2-litre V8 diesel that produces 380bhp and 6261b ft of torque, the Cayenne S Diesel is a complete rocketship in a straight line. Fitted with the optional Sports Chrono pack and its eight-speed automatic gearbox set to Sport Plus mode, it can hit 62mph from a standstill in a mere 5.4sec and, even more incredibly, in my opinion, will waft its way to 100 mph in just 12.8sec. And that makes it faster, even, than the original petrol Cayenne Turbo that so completely blew our minds on its debut in 2002.
