TWELVE YEARS AGO I watched a film called The Hole. I remember it distinctly, because when my friends and I came out of the cinema afterwards, we'd thought it was great. But then I got in the car and drove home, a 45-minute journey during which I thought about the film a bit, and went off it a bit. Then I thought about it a bit more and went off it some more. And then I went off it a bit more still, so that by the time I arrived home I'd changed my mind. I thought the only hole was the two-hour one in my life that I'd never get back, and I was cross with myself for being sucked in by its ludicrous plot in the first place.
