Quick thinking Rear-wheel drive: why?

How important is rear-wheel drive? How much would it matter to you, for instance, if the new small Jaguar turned out to be front-wheel drive rather than rear? Would it bother you to the extent that you'd no longer be interested in buying the car? If so, presumably you'd be equally uninterested in anything on offer at similar money from Audi, Alfa Romeo or Volvo? Similarly, in a blind test drive, could you honestly back yourself to pick a four-wheel-drive Audi from a front-wheel-drive Audi, assuming that everything else on the two cars was identical: same engine, same gearbox, same seats, same sounds?
