Reliant's Scimitar GTE was one of the best-looking British cars of the 1960s; it started a new trend, it was driven by royalty and was the first car with a split-folding rear seat. Yet the car is rapidly fading from consciousness, partly because its maker has also disappeared and partly, it seems, because this stylish, fast and practical car does not have a huge following. The GTE was not the first sporting estate - a dozen DB5s were converted to shooting brakes at Aston's request in the mid-1960s - but it popularised the idea.
