Our Auris is faithful and reliable, but it's not disproving the theory that Toyota hatches are painfully unexciting. LET'S GET ONE thing straight: our interest in the Toyota Auris is not based on electrifying performance, or whether it can out-monster our BMW M3 around the Nordschleife. But we are keen to find out if it can elevate Toyota's family hatchback status above that of white goods, to the point where it becomes, well, fun. The Auris is, after all, supposed to be a significant enough step beyond the Corolla to warrant the name change. We're certainly giving it a fair crack at this, for our Auris has racked up over 17,000 miles since it joined us last April. I've spread it around the office, too; most recently it spent Christmas in the hands of picture editor David Campbell, who filled the tank with diesel and headed north. Far north.
