HAVING SPENT THE first half of the year making the V60 a better car, Volvo's new 2.0-litre, four-cylinder diesel engine migrates to the smaller V40 - and picks up where it left off. Study the tech box for a moment: 99g/km of CO_2, 0-62mph in 7.4sec and 74mpg combined. That makes it every bit as parsimonious as a BMW 116d EfficientDynamics and a shade quicker than a Volkswagen Golf GTD. Were the car around it made of biscuit tin and spiders' webs, those numbers would still deserve a baffled shake of the head. But it isn't. Instead, the heavy-feeling V40 huddles around it like an affluent Swedish uncle: plain spoken, practical and accommodating.
