Good yet could do better - Our 308 impresses, but its potential to be truly special lies untapped

I THINK I'M STARTING to understand the Peugeot 308 pretty well, now that the mileage has progressed rapidly towards 5000. I've sampled what my friends and family think of it, I've taken it back to the dealer for the first (free) service, and I've used it for a quite a lot of long trips as well as short ones. Whenever I think of it, I see a compact and modern-looking car (not quite as good-looking as its predecessor) with just about the sweetest all-aluminium, 1.6-litre diesel engine going.
