Operating Units as Synchronous Condensers: Experiences With Converting Seven Sisters

Operating turbine-generator units as synchronous condensers allows hydro project owners to supply reactive power to the grid by running the units as either generators or motors. Manitoba Hydro converted its 150-MW Seven Sisters generating station to support the sale of 200 MW of firm power to Ontario Hydro. The utility's experiences with conversion provide valuable lessons for hydro project owners planning a similar project.
