During the 58 years since I came to Hong Kong, I have had dealings with various partners in the field of cotton, King of Fibres. Hong Kong was meanwhile going through an evolution from entrepot to industrial economy. Its first cotton mill was established in 1947, and in 1959 Hong Kong became one of the first cotton textile exporters to accept a "Voluntary Export Restraint", followed by India and Pakistan. This then extended from Britain, the originator, to the US and the EEC and all other textile manufacturing countries.
