Advances in fabrication have increased interest in techniques todesign gratings with specific properties. Various techniques todesign gratings with specified reflection characteristics alreadyexist. The relative advantages and disadvantages of two different(iterative vs noniterative) classes of design algorithms are comparedqualitatively and quantitatively. Iterative algo- rithms are quitegeneral and robust, but are slow and inefficient for strong gratings.Noniterative algorithms are extremely accurate and efficient but canonly be applied to a restricted class of gratings. Existing iterativetechniques also have the disadvantage that they give a more accuraterepresentation at the front of the grating, and the accuracydecreases rapidly along the length of the grating. New designtechniques are presented that overcome some of these existingdisadvantages by using information about the reflectioncharacteristics from both ends of the grating and also using thetransmission characteristics.
