Under Agriculture Promotional Practices FAI - Eastern Region organised a programme on "Soil health and balanced fertilisation" at Coochbihar(West Bengal) on 25-08-2011 for fertiliser dealers, sales personnel of cooperative societies and front line extension officers of fertiliser industry. About 65 participants attended the programme. In his inaugural address, Dr.Sarthak Barma, Director of Agriculture, Government of West Bengal said that depletion of soil fertility due to inadequate and imbalanced fertiliser use has emerged as a serious threat to sustainable agriculture. The organic carbon content of the soil is also low due to limited application of farm yard manure or compost to the soil due to which the fertiliser use efficiency is also very low. He advised all the participants to educate the farmers about the importance of balanced fertilisation and integrated nutrient management for sustaining and increasing the productivity of the crops. He appreciated the efforts of FAI for organising the programme.
