Sulphur Status in Red and Lateritic Soils of Birbhum District of West Bengal

Four hundred red and lateritic surface soil samples belonging to the order Alfisols from ten blocks viz.Bolpur-Sriniketan,Dubrajpur,Illambazar,Khyrasole,Lavpur,Mohammad Bazar,Nanoor,Sainthia,Suri-I and Suri-ll of Birbhum district of West Bengal were collected and analysed for major soil characteristics to assess the sulphur status.Soils varied widely in their properties and the available S content.Results indicate that the intensity of S-deficiency in red and lateritic soils of different blocks of Birbhum district of West Bengal ranged from about 21 to 40% with an average of 28% as per critical level approach and 25 to 41% with an average of 31% as per sulphur availability index (SAI).Correlation studies revealed intimate association of organic carbon with SO_4-S and SAI.
