Cracking the calf export conundrum

LAST MONTH saw intense media scrutiny of the production methods used in UK livestock farming systems. 'Kill it, Cook it, Eat it' sought to shock viewers, whilst Channel 4's trio of chefs comprehensively lambasted intensive systems in favour of extensive, welfare-friendly production. What all the programmes illustrated, however, is the publics growing interest in livestock production, the welfare methods employed and who is to be held accountable. In a bid to bring about a sea change in attitudes towards one of farming's leading welfare and economic issues - what to do with male dairy calves, a stakeholder's forum was established in 2006, the conclusions of which were published in January this year.
