Motor's Expense Repaid in Savings - Cost of building special brushless self-stabilizing motor offers gains in maintenance, energy, and ecology

The production cost of the SBSM (for 16-50 kW) is 30-50 higher than that of IM with the same power rating. Following our lab and field experiments during several years of industrial deployment, the feasibility study was carried out to consolidate the results. In the study, we determined that the payback (compensation) time for the increased SBSM production cost is between four to six months taking into consideration only the solution of the oversized IM motor problem and a reduction of energy losses. The increase in main voltage, better stability, reliability, conditions of the neighboring motors, and ecology improvement factors were not taken into account in economical calculations. However, these factors certainly represent significant additional benefits of SBSM implementation. It was substantiated and recommended to the oil industry to replace old IM by reliable SBSM and to consider this type of SBSM for new SRP plants, even if the cost of the SBSM is double that of the IM cost.
