A chain withNlinks is hung between two points at the same level. The nonlinear problem of its equilibrium is formulated and solved both numerically and through perturbations. The optimum number of links for minimum tension depends heavily on the ratio of the separation distance to the total chain length. Usually, the optimum number isN= 2 orN= 3, while the continuous catenary (N= #x221E;) is never optimum.
