The brains of 42 infants of very low birth weight and with severerespiratory distress were monitored continuously by ultrasound toascertain whether routine practices including clinical manipulationsat a neonatal intensive care unit could cause intraventricularhemorrhage. Such a hemorrhage occurred in 21 of the infants. In fourinfants, the moment at which the hemorhage occurred was shown by themonitoring.
