With the transformation of intelligence into IQ as a concrete reference point, this article indicates the general social impact of psychology practiced as a natural science. A metascience examiniation of the latter’s approach to man reveals the interrelations of its assumptions, methods, and content, while thus suggesting the need for a specifically human science. This alternative’s assumptions, methods, and content are specified as being rooted in a rigorous existential-phenom-enological philosophy. The human science approach is proffered as one comprehensive enough to account for man’s possibilities as well as his necessary restrictions.
