Africa faces enormous food security challenges. Most commentatorsagree that, despite the com- plexities of food insecurity, there willhave to be increases in food production from existing agriculturalland. Most, too, are pessimistic about the future, judging likelihoodof success on the basis of past performance of 'modern' agriculturaldevelopment. Sustainable agriculture, though, offers newopportunities, by emphasis- ing the productive values of natural,social and human capital, all assets that Africa either has inabundance or that can be regenerated at low financial cost.
