The benefits of safety standards

The revised version of EN60204 allows a direct fieldbus connection for safety systems. This can offer a host of installation and end-user benefits. Safety measures are important for all operational equipment on machines and plants. Emergency stop pushbuttons are a vital component of any safety measures - they allow the operator to stop the machine or plant quickly and reliably or to bring it to a safe condition. Traditionally, emergency stop pushbuttons have been connected to the controls via 1:1 wiring. The revised version of the European norm EN 60204 [1], however, also permits a direct fieldbus connection.
