Recent research and development activity is described in the field of e-textile-based wearable systems for diagnostics, monitoring and rehabilitation. Sensorised shirts for vital signs monitoring and wearable systems for gesture and posture recognition are specifically illustrated, resulting from a collaboration between Smartex Srl and the University of Pisa, both in Italy. Research and development in smart wearable systems and applications for personalised services, especially for health purposes, have significantly increased worldwide over the last few years. The motivation in the health areas is guided by the need to respond successfully to a set of healthcare challenges, i.e. reducing costs while maintaining high service quality, providing easy access from anywhere anytime to as many people as possible, and shifting the focus of healthcare expenditure from treatment to prevention through wellness programs.
