Genetic changes that trigger the proliferative behavior of renal cell carcinoma (RCO seem to be relevant for the individual prognosis of the patient. Different techniques such as tumor cytogenetics, immunohisto-chemical determination of the tumor-specific growth rates and DNA content are described with their prognostic relevance for this neoplasm. The results of the literature are summarized, discussed and compared with other human soft-tissue malignancies.
