Contribution of the veterinary profession to veterinary drug quality control

The history of the veterinary drug industry could be traced out as early as 1927. In the early parts of 1927-1934, the Buencamino Veterinary Laboratory, Inc. was producing vaccines as that of Anthrax which was used during the outbreaks of the diseasein 1932, 1934 and 1949. In the early parts of 1950, the first locally and commercially produced poultry biologicals was established at the Araneta Institute of Agriculture (AIA products) under the leadership of the late Dr. Ramon Acevedo. The products produced were Avian Pest Vaccine for New Castle Disease; Fowl Pox Vaccine and Fowl Cholera Bacterin. Other products produced aside from the biologicals were the different sulfa preparations for coccidiosis, coryza, fowl cholera and other respiratory diseases. The Bureau of Animal Industry during that time was already producing their own Avian Pest Vaccine which was given free to the public. Also Hog Cholera Vaccine C strain (Coronel strain) was produced at the BAI by Dr. Anacleto Coronel who discovered and isolated the virus strain. Rabies vaccine (PD 113) was the other vaccine produced by the BAI. Francon Vet Laboratory owned by Dr. Francisco Cortes along Shaw Boulevard in Mandaluyong was also producing that time fowl pox and avian pest vaccine. Meanwhile, Dr. Victor Buencamino again was involved in the production of the Rinder pest vaccine, while Dr. San Agustin of BAI was also involved-in the production in the production of the Hemorrhagic Sepricema bacterin.
